Born in France, Gaston Lachaise studied sculpture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and began his artistic career as a designer of Art Nouveau decorative objects for the French jeweler René Lalique. He moved to the United States in 1906 and worked in Boston for H.H. Kitson, an academic sculptor of military monuments, then to New York in 1912, where he became the assistant to the sculptor Paul Manship. Like Manship, his work may be seen at the Rockefeller Center.
Lachaise married American Isabel Dutaud Nagle in 1917. She was the inspiration as a muse/model/wife for his sculptures, often monumental, which quickly placed him at the forefront of modern sculpture. He became most famous for his female nudes, which have been compared to those of Renoir. This catalog includes essays, photographs and letters by Lachaise depicting Isabel, her body and being, the impetus of his most powerful work. |
