Advance Information Sheet

'Utterly majestic... the photography is absolutely perfect. It's impossible not to be dazzled by the sheer scope of English watchmaking when it has been presented so cogently and authoritatively as this' QP

This is the first book to cover all aspects of English watches from every period. Watches represent a fascinating combination of applied art and science and an outstanding contribution to their history and development was made in England.

By dividing the watches into six periods, each with its own introduction, the author has been able to provide an admirably clear and comprehensive survey, to describe the pioneering inventions as they were made and to illustrate the distinctive character of the English watch as it evolved. An outline of each period is followed by information on the trade in London and the provinces, watchmakers, case makers, case styles and decoration, dials, hands, characteristics of the mechanisms and timekeeping capabilities. Over 290 watches illustrating these points have been carefully selected from both private and public collections and details have been enlarged to clarify important features. Many of these watches have never been illustrated before.

There is an extensive glossary which includes further technical information and, as well as a detailed general index, there are separate indexes of makers and case makers.

The author, a dealer for more than forty years, has a lasting enthusiasm for his subject. He is familiar with its many facets and used to providing answers on a wide range of specific questions. This book is intended not only to be a useful guide to those new to the subject but also a valuable point of reference for those already familiar with it.

"...this publication is a major contribution to the genre and will be a standard reference for many years to come." British Museum magazine, 2009.
Terence Camerer Cuss, the sixth generation of the family firm Camerer Cuss & Co founded in London in 1788, has been involved in the world of antique watches and clocks all his life. He has been a liveryman of the Clockmakers' Company since 1969. The Antique Collectors' Club first published The Camerer Cuss Book of Antique Watches, a revised and enlarged edition of his father's Country Life Book of Watches, in 1976 and they have reprinted it several times. He moved the business premises from New Oxford Street to St. James s in 1983 where he continued dealing for the next twenty years. He wrote the limited edition catalogue of Lord Sandberg's important collection The Sandberg Watch Collection published by Antiquorum, Geneva in 1998. He has contributed a number of articles to magazines and periodicals, and continues to enjoy his subject, the research and occasional discovery!
